BANK SCENARIO
SHORT DESCRIPTION

moBank is a mid-sized Portuguese bank that concentrates on delivering banking services through electronic channels.
The bank has a WWW site that provides access to its services. It also provides a simplified version of that site for users of mobile phones with WAP and XHTML browsers.

The bank decides to create a new way for clients with mobile phones to access its services. To achieve this, they expose some of their banking services through Bluelemon technology.

Now instead of visiting the WAP site, customers can download a Java application to their phones. The application is branded (color scheme, logo, sounds) to match moBank corporate image.
Depending on the phone's capabilities, one of two application variants is picked automatically: moBlue (for older phones) or moBlueX. The application is stored on the user's phone and can be launched any time.

USAGE SCENARIO 1: BLUE SMS MESSAGES

José Batista and his wife share an account in moBank.
They also have a mortgage loan at moBank and the monthly payment is automatically made from their account.

José has a Sony Ericsson W300i mobile phone, which came as a part of his mobile plan. He only uses it to talk and send and receive text messages (SMS). He is not interested in technical novelties.

José decided to spare some time and install the moBlueX application on his phone for the following reasons:

  • Since the time he installed it, he pays nothing for using the application: neither to the bank, nor to the phone company. moBank updates the data in his application (account balance, transfer history etc.) by sending Blue SMS messages which automatically launch the application.
The Blue SMS messages are like a regular SMS message - receiving is free. The application does not use GPRS and does not incur air-time charges, even in roaming!
  • He can check the account balance and history any time he wants - during shopping or while picking the wine at a restaurant.
He can also monitor his loan repayments.
  • When his wife uses her credit card to pay for a new bag, the moBlueX application tells him about immediately after moBank authorizes the transaction. The account balance and history are automatically updated.
  • Similarly - José has constant access to most up-to-date information about his loan.

see the technical background for this scenario.

USAGE SCENARIO 2: EFFICIENCY, SECURITY

Maria Gomes has two accounts in moBank: private and business account. She also uses a credit card from moBank.

Maria has a Nokia 6020 - small phone dimensions are important for her. She has a flat-rate GPRS plan.
She is a dynamic, quick acting person and she expects the same from the solution she uses. She pays attention to the security of those solutions.

She decided to use moBlueX for the following reasons:

  • She has access to all bank operations she needs and she can perform them several times quicker than when using the XHTML browser in her phone.
  • She feels that the service is more secure. She knows that her account can be accessed only from her private phone that she always carries with her. (see the technical background)
  • Even when she sits at a computer, she performs most of her frequent transfers from moBlueX. It is more convenient and faster.
Transferring money to an account to which she has performed transfers before takes her about one and a half minute and requires the following steps:
    • Go to "Applications" menu on her phone and launch moBlueX
    • Enter a 6-digit PIN that authorizes access to the application
    • Pick account, start transfer, pick a destination account from transfer history, enter transfer amount
    • Wait for the phone to connect to the server and for the server to send Blue SMS message to the application
    • Review and confirm the transfer details (accounts, amount)
    • Enter a 10-character password
    • Receive a confirmation message, close moBlueX and return to phone menu

USAGE SCENARIO 3: ALL PHONE MODELS

Diego Valente has a business account in moBank.

Diego is an entrepreneur who travels a lot. He likes to his old Nokia 6310i, praising its clear display and durable battery.

Diego's phone is not capable of receiving Blue SMS messages or performing secure transfers. Even though, he uses the moBlue application for the following reasons:

  • He can launch the application and check his account balance and transfer history whenever he wants. To update the data in his phone, he activates the "Update account" option and, if there were any changes since he last updated, new data is received by his application and displayed.
It all takes seconds. (see the technical background)
  • It is much more convenient and several times faster than the WAP browser. The WAP site required an Internet connection for every use and Diego was always irritated by having to enter his long user name and password every time he wanted to access his account balance or history. This took time and entering often caused mistakes.
With moBlue Diego only has to enter his full user name and password at the first run. After that he only enters a 4-digit PIN when he starts the application.
Additionally, Diego does not have to connect to the Internet when he he just wants to review his transfer history. The connection is only required to update the history with new transfers.
  • Diego chose to include a currency converter feature in his moBlue application. This way he can easily convert currencies when the travels.
Most current exchange rates are automatically downloaded when he activates the "Update account" option.
